BIO: I am an assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at The Pennsylvania State University. My research is focused on improving communication outcomes and enhancing quality of life for individuals who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). My ongoing projects are directed at pursuing better intervention outcomes with the realization that part of achieving a better outcome may mean determining intervention approaches that are more effective and efficient at teaching needed skills. Currently this line of research is focused on determining how to improve intervention decision-making and planning based on how individual child characteristics at baseline, or before the initiation of an intervention program influence the child’s response to an intervention.

Chris Klein 2546 Ridgemoor Dr. SE Kentwood, Michigan 49512 I am a voice to those that have none and helping hand to those with disabilities, even though I was born with cerebral palsy and use augmentative communication to help me interact with the rest of the world. I have used my first augmentative communication device since I was 6 years old. This allowed me to be mainstreamed starting in third grade, and opened doors that nobody thought were achievable. I am a graduate of Hope College and have studied at Western Theological Seminar. This has opened my doors for me and allows me to speak at churches, conferences, retreats, and schools. I have been published in Christianity Today. This has led me to start Writing Lessons from the Big Toe. It is my faith journey and provides unique insights regarding God, people and the importance of community. It challenges the reader to see these concepts from a different perspectives examine these in their walks of faith. Because I have committed my life to assisting others like myself, I decided to form Clay Vessel Inc a not-for-profit resource for assistive technology (AT). The organization is a destination, guide, resource and link to AT. Our mission was to give people the tools and information they need to obtain devices. Over the past four years, I have been working closely with people that use AAC. I have realized that the AAC community has a real need for a mentor program. This is why I have started to form an organization called HIPE. It stands for Helping Individuals Pursue the Extraordinary. HIPE is committed to assisting persons with speech disabilities live in fulfilling way. We believe that the cornerstone to a full life is derived from the ability to participate in meaningful relationships with others and engage in everyday social interactions a fully ratified participant. In order to address this primary objective, HIPE is focused on providing tools and services to people with and without speech disabilities in order to enable and enhance communication leading to social integration. Specifically, HIPE will develop and distribute educational materials and provide mentoring services to persons with speech disabilities:

I am a Speech-Language Pathologist at the Delaware Autism Program where I work exclusively with students having the educational diagnosis of Autism. Our program uses the principles of applied behavior analysis and a collaborative model of education. Each classroom is staffed with a teacher, 1 or more paraprofessionals, a speech-language pathologist and a psychologist or behavior analyst. Students are also supported by an art teacher, adaptive physical education teachers, music therapists, and occupational and physical therapists, as needed. Our students receive intensive communication therapy and AAC training in the classroom, throughout the school and in a variety of community settings. My current caseload consists of students aged 12 to 21; however the program serves children as young as 18 months through age 21, when they transition to adult services.

As a self-employed speech-language-communication pathologist (SLP), I provide services to help expand the comprehension and expressive skills of individuals with language learning and communication challenges. My work is done in homes and the community with consultative work in schools and early intervention programs. My background includes extensive work with families, work in an acute pediatric/adult rehabilitation hospital, outpatient clinic and approved private school for students with complex medical, educational and communication needs. I am now also working to help include children with complex needs into their local schools. I provide evaluation and intervention services. Diagnostic labels do not capture the true individual but they help us understand resources and possible challenges. I work with children with varied diagnoses including autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, a variety of genetic disorders, sensory impairments, language disorders and cognitive challenges. I have a special interest in working with individuals with cortical visual impairment who need AAC solutions. I am also an advocate for the use of apps and computers for mobile learning, communication and educational instruction. I conduct presentations to share clinical interventions based on research and the creative arts. I have received ACE awards from the American Speech Hearing Language Association for continuing education. Best of all, I enjoy my work. www.everywaycommunications.com
